Koryo Hand Acupuncture is also called Sooji Chim when only needles are used. Koryo Hand Therapy also includes all other non invasive techniques. All developments since 2006 are covered by the term Seogum Therapy.
Seogum Therapy is painless, safe and side effect free. It has achieved excellent effects and it has various theories and tools.
Koryo Hand Acupuncture was discovered and developed by Tae Woo Yoo between 1971-1975. The three main theories are: 1. The hand represents the whole body (especially the middle finger represents the head) 2. There are 14 micromeridians and 345 acupuncture points (presently 401) on the hands to control internal organs 3. Each finger represents each Jang organ.
Yunki constitution theory, acubeam, yin yang pulse taking and three one abdominal palpation has been developed as KHT diagnostic methods.
KHT therapeutic tools include KHT needles, new KHT needles, golden KHT needles, T needles, automatic needle applicator, probe etc.
Seogum Therapeutic tools have also been developed including ki flow press pellets, acubeam, T Bong, ring, bracelet, Sooji food, skin cream, moxibustion, recently seoam gold press pellets and seogum probe and hand roller.
Koryo Hand Therapy was researched and published and then Sujok therapy suddenly appeared. The author would like to compare the two therapies and publish their findings.

Sujok acupuncture is the theory that the thumb represents the head (in KHT the middle finger represents the head). Because these conflicting theories may cause confusion this article aims to highlight the issues relating to Sujok acupuncture.

1. The originator of Sujok acupuncture is called Jae O Park but was originally Chang Wan Park.
2. He learnt KHT since 1985; in 1986 he completed a certificate in herbal medicine at Hyang Gun Herbal Medicine Academy (At that time run by the originator of KHT).
3. Around 1989 he passed on a book he wrote to the originator of KHT Dr Yoo, who kept this book in his possession due to it being written by one of his students.
4. After comparing the content of the two therapies Dr Yoo concluded that much information in Sujok therapy was very similar to KHT with slight alterations, even the names of the therapies were similar- Sujok and Sooji.
(1) Chang O Park -> Jae Woo Park (sounds like Tae Woo Yoo)
(2) Sooji Chim -> Sujok Chim
(3) KHT middle finger is head, Sujok thumb is head
(4) KHT- kimek (micro meridian) Sujok- byolmek (micro meridian)
(5) KHT- kihyol (acupuncture point) Sujok- byolhyol (Acupuncture point)
(6) KHT needles are used for Sujok therapy
(7) One of the diagnostic methods in KHT is an oscillator in cyber therapy, this is now also used in Sujok
(8) Probes are used in KHT and are now used in Sujok
(9) KHT Yunki (five elements and six energies) constitution theory has been copied by Sujok to create the ten celestial stems constitution.
(10) KHT Seoam bong (press pellets) have been copied by Sujok to produce Byol bong
(11) KHT applicator principles have been used to create Sujok applicator
Sujok use pyol mek in the foot
The basic principles, methods, theory, name are also taken from KHT Sooji Chim and slightly changed to produce Sujok Therapy
5. In 1989 it was discovered through Yin Yang pulse taking experimentation undertaken by Tae Woo Yoo that there were many major issues with the theories and systems underlying Sujok Therapy. The content of this experimentation was publishes over around 7 issues of the KHT monthly magazine as a serial. A separate volume was also published recording the comparison experimentation between KHT and Sujok Therapy (small magnets were mainly used in these experimentations).
Recent experimentation through KHT needles have shown the same results.
6. The biggest issue with Sujok Therapy theory is the thumb is head, which cannot be proven in any way.
In KHT the theory that the middle finger represents the head can be proven through experimentation.
There are 4 main blood vessels supplying blood and oxygen into the brain. Two are carotid and two are vertebral. E8 and I2 in KHT correspond to these blood vessels. If stimulation with KHT needles, seoam press pellets, ki flowing press pellets, magnets etc is undertaken on these points the cerebral blood flow can be controlled. Especially when carotid is thick and vertebral is thin, N magnets on E8 and S magnets on I2 control cerebral blood flow (small magnets, over 100 gausse).
Professor Kyu Hyun Park of Pusan University has undertaken much experimentation through TCD and FMRI to confirm this.
However, the equivalent location of points in Sujok Therapy theory (the thumb) were stimulated with KHT needles, magnets and press pellets caused no change in cerebral blood flow. On the contrary, this did more harm than good.
Therefore, there is no basis to prove that the thumb corresponds to the head; in fact it causes deterioration in Yin Yang pulses.
7. Each experimentation of 14 byolmek in Sujok therapy has shown there is no effect to control Yin Yang pulses, however the locations where KHT and Sujok Therapy meridians overlap a slight change can be noted.
8. Stimulation according to Sujok Theory (especially thumb is head) does not control Yin Yang pulse, in fact long term stimulation causes a deterioration in yin yang pulses.
9. In KHT both hands represent the whole body, each individual hand represents the left and right side of the body. However the left and right side on the body in Sujok Therapy is completely different from KHT.
Stimulation on the hand according to Sujok theory makes yin yang pulses deteriorate and possibly is dangerous.
10. In KHT the theory of yin yang pulse taking has certain principles and methods which are diagnosis and control if cerebral blood flow. However, in Sujok Therapy pulse method there are no principles and the aim of diagnosis is not clear.
11. Sujok Therapy imitated KHT five finger theory and are using this in their practice.
12. Kimek (micromeridian) simple stimulation or stimulation through tonification or reduction methods according to KHT brings definite effects. This can be proven through yin yang pulse taking.
However, this cannot be proven when byolmek (micro meridian) are stimulated, in fact the pulses worsen.
Sometimes Sujok Therapy map byolmek on Kimek. However right side and left side and flow direction is different.
13. The unique theory of KHT Jang Bu organs of the same element have the opposite properties in function, therefore if the Jang is excess the Bu is automatically deficient and visa versa. Sujok Therapy reproduced and used this theory.
14. The theory explaining with jang bu are excess and deficient on the basis of five element and the rule how diseases develop and change through this theory is also a unique theory of KHT. This theory has been reproduced and used by Sujok Therapy.
15. Gold and silver press pellets and electric beam has been firstly developed by KHT.
Conclusion
Sujok Therapy just copied and slightly modified KHT theory and developed their theory and principles without any proper diagnostic methods and measurements. All theories of Sujok Therapy cannot be proven through yin yang pulse taking and on the contrary do more harm than good. If there is a little effect felt, it could possibly be placebo or a location where the Sujok and KHT meridians overlap. Treating people with Sujok acupuncture can be very dangerous therefore special precautions are needed.
