Dr.Yoo resurrected the physiognomy, and further studied
the theory of the somatic reflex system. Despite all
his research and findings from studying all possible
parts of body and sources, his research was not successful
until the one night in August, 1971.
"It was in the hot summer of August in 1971. At
that time, I was deeply involved in searching for a
new approach to acupuncture therapy. The research was
not an easy task. I had been studying and experimenting
on various parts of the body but couldn't come up with
anything. I was so frustrated not being able to find
anything in spite of all the hard work. It was midnight
when I was awakened from sleep by a severe pain in the
back of my head. It was so painful that I could hardly
move my head.
I pressed the painful region, but I didn't help at all.
Then, I needled the region but the pain was still there.
So I decided to sleep on it trying to forget about
the pain. After a while, I think I was in a state of
half awake and half asleep, then an idea hit me.
The idea was to relate the painful region to the middle
finger. I woke up immediately to experiment with the
idea even though it occurred to me while I was in a
dreamy state.
I wanted to try it out because it was something that
I had not tried yet. So, I pressed my middle finger
with a ball-point pen and indeed found a particularly
painful spot. I pressed other areas on the finger with
the same amount of pressure to see if the particular
pain was a normal pain due to pressing.
I found out that it was not a normal pain, and it seemed
to correspond with the pain in the back of my head.
I inserted an acupuncture needle into the painful spot
on the middle finger. After a few minutes, the headache
disappeared.
The time required for recovery and the degree of pain
relief were overwhelming.
I visualized the tip of my middle finger as possible
presentation of my head and wondered whether there was
a relationship between the rest of the hand and the
whole human body.
Further experiments revealed that a corresponding relationship
between the hand and whole body indeed exists. That
was the birth of a new medicine : "Koryo Hand Therapy".
The past 23 years have allowed a tremendous development
in the theory and practice of hand acupuncture.
All the principles underlying Koryo Hand Acupuncture
are based on Yin Yang Pulse Diagnosis.
A profound theory of KHT enables us to prove the effect
of treatment in a scientific way and to develop KHT
more and more in spite of many difficult situations
and hardships.
